New To First Lutheran Church?

This page is assuming you are a Lutheran, but unfamiliar with the First Lutheran, Benton, congregation.

First Lutheran at a Glance

We are a congregation of The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LC-MS). The Missouri Synod is a conservative, confessional Lutheran church body with nearly 2 million members and almost 6,000 congregations nationwide. The Missouri Synod is a member of the International Lutheran Council (ILC), an organization of conservative Lutheran Church bodies throughout the world.

First Lutheran in Benton was established in 1960, and currently has a little over 100 members.

We operate First Lutheran Elementary School, a traditional school with grades Kindergarten through Fifth.

Our pastor is James D. Burns.

A Little More about First Lutheran

Our services are traditionally done, and follow closely the five settings of the Divine Service in the Lutheran Service Book (LSB). We follow the 3rd setting during the Advent, Christmas and Epiphany seasons, the 4th setting during Lent, the 2nd Setting in the Easter Season, the 1st Setting during the season of Pentecost, and the 5th setting in October.

We follow the Three Year Lectionary for the Divine Services. Members are encouraged to follow the daily lectionary also in the personal devotions.

We celebrate communion at every Sunday morning service. Communicants are encouraged to commune from the common cup, but communion by individual cups is also provided.

We do not “pass the plate” during the service. Instead, we rely on members to place their offerings in an offering box at the back of the sanctuary as they enter or leave.

An Evening Prayer service is conducted most Wednesday evenings in conjunction with Christian education. Chapel services are conducted for the school (but all are invited and welcomed to attend), and they follow a simplified Matins format.
